Amazing Grace

by John Newton

Amazing!  That's how John Newton described the grace of God.  Late in his life, Newton said, "My memory is nearly gone: but I remember two things, that I am a great sinner, and that Christ is a great Savior.  What amazing grace!"

That amazing grace:

        taught my heart to fear...

        my fears relieved...

hath brought me safe thus far...

        will lead me home.

Newton became a minister of the Anglican Church after being influenced by the ministry of John and Charles Wesley.  He wrote this hymn, plus a few others, after he and a close friend created their own hymnal, wanting to offer an alternative to singing psalms in their church.

In his early life, Newton was a rough and wayward seaman and was involved in the practice of capturing slaves and delivering them to be sold.  A storm at sea, however, threatened his life and caused him to change his life-course to one that eventually led to his salvation.
